Hawkes is an artist based in Newcastle Upon Tyne in Northern England. Her art practice explores natural materials and their traces as a way of interpreting her personal relationships with the earth. She works in a very process driven way, letting exploration of materials lead her practice. Hawkes often assembles multiple elements from one place within a piece, leading to the work having a deep connection to the land it’s from. For example, in her recent work she uses chalk, charcoal, bark and clay collected from one forest. Her practice explores ideas around vessels as holders of memory and reflects on human relationships with time by observing nature.
